Meet the Finalist: Minh Huynh, "Dead Of The Night"

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

The TV was my best friend growing up in the 90s. I'd record movies and music videos and, watch them on repeat everyday. My secret dream was to be a music artist and have a music video of my own. Thinking it was an impossibility, I followed my other passion for the visual arts and became an automotive designer and graphic designer with a love of storytelling. At 27, I took the plunge to pursue music. After writing Dead Of The Night, I had a vision for the music video. So I called upon my talented friends to help me create the animated music video.

What's is your all time favorite film? Why is it special to you?

I'd say Disney's animated Mulan is my favourite film. Mulan was my childhood hero and inspiration. I could especially relate to the film as there wasn't many people who looked like me on mainstream media in Australia at the time, so it was great to see Asian culture being celebrated. More recently, I love films by director Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Bladerunner 2045, Arrival). They're visually stunning and such great storytelling!

What tips would you give aspiring filmmakers who are just starting their careers?

I don't really see myself as a filmmaker, but more of a creator. So I'd say to build your community. Go to workshops, free events or any events in your city that helps you meet people. Make new friends, share the journey together and even make stuff together! That's what has helped me in my creative career.
